Sandustry Early Game Tips
The best early-game improvements are operational: learn copy, paste, replace, and hotbar controls; keep Gold inside Collectors; let gravity separate materials; and reserve room around the Shaker. Water is consumed by Sand, while Residue accumulates quickly, so plan both supply and waste routes before scaling input.

Use the construction controls
Use C to select structures for copying, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to duplicate a layout, and Ctrl as the default Replace modifier. Sandustry provides ten hotbar groups with ten slots each; Alt plus a number or the mouse wheel switches groups without reopening build menus.
Use the live bindings screen to identify build, remove, tool, and movement actions before placing the first permanent module. Make one test cell, one short belt, and one removal action in an empty area. This confirms the current control context and prevents a long drag placement from cutting across Water or loose material that will move when construction begins.
Design for access from the start. Leave a player lane, a visible input, an empty output pocket, and a shutoff point around every early machine. Compactness becomes useful only after the line can be observed and cleared. A small amount of unused space costs less than rebuilding a sealed module when one Gold or Seed pixel reaches the wrong cavity.
Treat copied layouts as proposals. After pasting, inspect every intake, output, and corner because terrain and existing material can make two apparently identical modules behave differently. Start the copy with one limited batch and keep the original module running as a comparison until the new one survives a restart.
Spend early Gold against a written bottleneck. If manual transport consumes most of the player's time, research logistics; if mixed material blocks the line, prioritize separation; if the current objective requires a named machine, verify its prerequisite in the live tree. Avoid spending from memory when the official Research page can change.
Keep the first factory modular: wetting, shaking, collection, burning, pressing, and planting should each have a visible boundary. When output stops, this makes the first broken step obvious. A single open service side and a small overflow pocket are often more valuable than another compact machine.
End the early-game audit by saving, reloading, and restarting the line from empty. Confirm that Gold still reaches collection, Residue has a destination, and Water cannot flood the service lane. A module that survives those conditions is a better template for expansion than one judged during a short full-buffer run.
Exploit density around the Shaker
Wet Sand is denser than Residue, and the Shaker moves Residue slowly. The official Shaker page describes a diagonal or stepped arrangement that lets the heavier feed settle while pushing lighter output toward a collection route, but leave access space so a small blockage remains easy to clear.
Produce Wet Sand in a controlled chamber before the Shaker. The official Sand page documents one Sand plus one Water becoming two Wet Sand, while the Shaker produces Residue and has a 25 percent chance for Gold. Count a larger batch before judging Gold output; four Wet Sand does not guarantee exactly one Gold because each result is probabilistic.
Use the documented ability of Gold to pass through the Shaker and test the diagonal separation with labeled samples. Give the guaranteed Residue stream more immediate overflow room because it fills on every processed input. If the machine stops, inspect the Residue destination before adding more Wet Sand or changing the intake.
Separate value, waste, and water
A Collector counts Gold without blocking pixels, so position it on a dependable Gold route. Send Residue elsewhere for later burning, use Filters when mixed solids become unmanageable, and treat the water reservoir as consumable until renewable Snow and Steam infrastructure is ready.
Send Gold toward collection and preserve Seed for the Wet Seed and Flower chain. Keep Water contact upstream of the Planter Box so the correct input reaches it, and isolate spare Wet Seeds from the growth chamber. In v0.5.6, one Wet Seed produces exactly one Flower, while apparent spreading consumes nearby Wet Seeds.
Start a versioned factory notebook with the source, transformation, output, and first measured bottleneck for each module. Use official ratios where published and label every other rate as an observation. Check starting and ending inventory over the same interval; a reserve can make an undersupplied line look stable for several minutes.
Before advancing a Tier or spending scarce Gold, confirm that the current line can restart from empty, recover from a full destination, and survive a save reload. Keep a recovery copy before a destructive Lava experiment, a major excavation, or the first modded launch. Early discipline makes later Aura, power, and thermal chains much easier to debug.
